Assessing the Landscape of Sugarcane and Jaggery Production in Bangladesh
DevMaker Consulting conducted a baseline survey in Khoksha Upazila (Kushtia District) and Pangsha Upazila (Rajbari District) from April to May 2022. This study aimed to capture a snapshot of the current state of sugarcane production, jaggery processing, and the socio-economic environment impacting 197 micro-entrepreneurs engaged in these activities.
Partnership for Prosperity:
The Programme for Community Development (PCD) has joined forces with PKSF to implement a sub-project titled “Gur Processing (Jaggery)” in Pabna and Kustia Districts under the Sustainable Enterprise Project (SEP). This initiative aligns with the global goals of the SEP to empower micro-enterprises operating in the jaggery processing subsector.
Enhancing Business and Environment:
The sub-project will focus on improving the overall business and environmental conditions for jaggery producers through interventions within existing business clusters. PCD plans to provide crucial support to farmers, enabling them to:
- Adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): Implement safe and sustainable sugarcane production methods to ensure high-quality jaggery.
- Command Premium Prices: Secure higher market value for their produce through consistent quality assurance.
Baseline Survey: A Crucial Tool
DevMaker Consulting’s baseline survey served two key purposes:
- Assessing Current Status: Providing a comprehensive understanding of the farmers’ current situation, including their agricultural practices, economic well-being, and environmental context.
- Monitoring Progress: Establishing a baseline against which project outcomes can be measured, facilitating effective monitoring and evaluation of the intervention’s impact.
Data-Driven Decision Making:
The findings of the baseline survey will be instrumental in:
- Tailoring Interventions: Identifying specific needs and challenges faced by farmers, informing the development of customized support programs and training initiatives.
- Measuring Success: Establishing quantifiable indicators to track progress towards project goals and assess the effectiveness of implemented interventions.
- Informing Future Strategies: Providing valuable data to guide future efforts aimed at enhancing the sustainability and profitability of jaggery production in Bangladesh.
Building a Sustainable Future:
PCD and PKSF, with the support of DevMaker Consulting, are committed to fostering a thriving jaggery production sector in Bangladesh. This project aims to contribute to improved livelihoods for farmers, enhanced food security, and environmental sustainability in targeted communities.
